NVIDIA RTX 2080 and 2080 Ti review: To 4K 60 FPS, and beyond

NVIDIA's new RTX graphics cards are for the gamer that wants it all. I'm talking about 4K gaming beyond 60 frames per second, with the graphics settings dialed to the max. Both the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti are a significant leap beyond NVIDIA's last GPU generation, but they're more than just the gold standard of 4K gaming. Review: Apple Watch Series 4

Roughly two-and-half minutes into my run, the watch kicks in. There’s a haptic buzz on my wrist. “It looks like you’re working out,” the watch face reads. That’s followed by a big, yellow button, suggesting I start an indoor run. I tap the neon button and the clock starts, comping me a reasonable approximation of […] https://ift.tt/2QJz9aV Brian Heater September 19, 2018 at 06:00AM

NY Attorney General: Cryptocurrency exchanges lack security, fairness, and integrity

Cryptocurrency exchanges may not be as safe as we first thought. A report from the state of New York’s attorney general has revealed that most exchanges do not have basic consumer protections in place, leaving them vulnerable to manipulation. “Many virtual currency platforms lack the necessary policies and procedures to ensure the fairness, integrity, and security of their exchanges,” state Attorney General Barbara Underwood said in a statement. “Most platforms seem to cater to professional, automated traders, with many venues offering special pricing and other features to such traders, leaving retail customers at a disadvantage.” As pointed out by The…

Aubrey de Grey is working to cure aging whether you like it or not

Don’t think about living forever. Just think about never getting sick, ever again. At least that’s how Aubrey de Grey would like you to contextualize his work. The notoriously bearded biomedical gerontologist is the scientific spark that lights up so many all-caps “immortality” headlines. De Grey wants to increase human longevity so significantly that death could become a thing of the past, a condition people fell prey to before they developed the medical technology to stop it. It’s been the center of his work for approximately 20 years. De Grey started as a software guy at the genetics department of…

Scientists Learn Bacteria in Your Gut Can Produce Electricity

Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley say that certain bacteria found in our bodies can produce an electric current. They figured this out after noticing that a bacteria that makes us sick also had similar properties. The discovery won't be charging our phones anytime soon, but it can help us better understand our bodies, and help with the batteries of tomorrow. ► Subscribe for more tech & culture videos: http://on.mash.to/subscribe ◄ MORE FROM MASHABLE ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/6ElleCub6uM ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/jAu1ZsTCA64 ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/W8T6fYt9-tA  Subscribe to Mashable: http://on.mash.to/subscribe  Best of playlist: https://on.mash.to/BestOf  MASHABLE ACROSS THE WEB  Mashable.com: http://on.mash.to/1hCcRpl  Facebook: https://ift.tt/2I7KIYV Twitter: https://ift.tt/2IgAQIf Instagram: https://ift.tt/2I6suXD Mashable is for superfans. Apple Watch Series 4 review: it lives up to the hype

The Apple Watch Series 4 has been fully redesigned with new screens, new sizes, new speakers, and of course new stuff inside. There's a faster processor, Bluetooth 5, and a more accurate set of sensors. Dieter Bohn spent the past week testing the Watch Series 4 and, yes it is expensive, but everything is just better. Better screen, better health features, and better speed. Tech Jargon Simplified (#3): Virtual Machine

Tech Jargon Simplified (#3): Virtual Machine Here is what wiki says about Virtual Machine A "virtual machine" was originally defined by Popek and Goldberg as "an efficient, isolated duplicate of a real computer machine. Current use includes virtual machines that have no direct correspondence to any real hardware. The physical, "real-world" hardware running the VM is generally referred to as the 'host', and the virtual machine emulated on that machine is generally referred to as the 'guest'. A host can emulate several guests, each of which can emulate different operating systems and hardware platforms. Would you want to try explaining this using your own language? AI can protect elephants from poachers — here’s how

A project by the USA’s Cornell University has been using Artificial Intelligence to help with protecting elephants in Afrika against poaching. Named the Elephant Listening Project (ELP), the initiative tracks elephant herds across the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo. The tracking of elephants is done through 50 sensors placed in various locations in the park. A major focus has been to monitor elephant activity at numerous forest clearings throughout Central Afrika, but ELP has also used acoustic methods to estimate elephant density in Northern Congo as well as in Kakum, Ghana. The effects of increasing human activity on a population of…
