Cryptocurrency exchange Changelly admits it can steal users’ Monero (if it wanted to)

Government regulators haven’t made things easy for anonymous cryptocurrency projects. Monero fans are complaining about being profiled by cryptocurrency exchanges, after Changelly was found to wield the ability to effectively “steal” cryptocurrency from customers. One user has taken to Reddit to vent their frustrations. After attempting to exchange some cryptocurrency for Monero via Changelly, they were automatically classified as high risk. The funds were immediately quarantined until the account has been cleared of anything untoward.  A Changelly spokesperson has since confirmed the exchange service can indeed withhold suspicious transactions (and hold their funds until users provide further information). “To all Monero…

Google erroneously banned a cryptocurrency mining app with 1M+ downloads

In an effort to curb the spread of crypto-jacking software, Google updated its terms of service in July to ban on-device cryptocurrency mining apps from the Play Store. Unfortunately, it appears that (in addition to a slew of mining apps) the internet giant has erroneously banned some legitimate apps – including one with over a million installs. The removed app – MinerGate – originally offered both on-device mining and a remote cloud mining management functionality. To comply with the updated terms of service from the Big G, MinerGate removed the on-device mining feature from its app. “Mining on your phone…

EU copyright reform will penalize sports fans

A lot has been written about the danger the planned EU copyright reform poses for freedom of speech online, for memes and remixes, for software developers, and startups. Below, my colleague Dan Dalton and I draw attention to another group that would be badly affected by the planned law: Sports fans across Europe. Filtering fan culture away As you may have heard, Article 13 would establish “censorship machines” that surveil all your posts on internet platforms and scan them for supposed copyright infringement. If these filters don’t approve your upload, it will never go online. Upload filters would prevent any video using even the shortest snippets of sports broadcasts from seeing the…
