(For example, knowing that if you want your avatar to jump further you need to hold the jump button down rather than just press it).…

Why can’t all set-top boxes be as stylish as the Freebox Delta?

Developers are our best bet to stop Apple’s App Store monopoly

Any day now, the US Supreme Court will issue a decision in a case called Apple Inc. v. Pepper, where a group of iPhone users have said that the Apple App Store, the only place they can get software (or apps) on their phones, is an unlawful monopoly. They’re right.  It’s no secret that Apple forces users of its mobile devices (iPhones and iPads) to download apps through its app store. Apple does this so it gets a cut of every software purchase on a mobile device running on iOS. In the Pepper case, someone has finally stood up to…

How technology is changing sexual identity

Sex as we know it is about to change. We are already living through a new sexual revolution, thanks to technologies that have transformed the way we relate to each other in our intimate relationships. But we believe a second wave of sexual technologies is now starting to appear, and these are transforming how some people view their very sexual identity. People we refer to as “digisexuals” are turning to advanced technologies, such as robots, virtual reality (VR) environments, and feedback devices known as teledildonics, to take the place of human partners. Defining digisexuality In our research, we use the…

Can You Tell Between a Real and Computer-Generated Face?

The internet is filed with crap. So much so that even stuff that looks legitimate is still just a bunch of doodie wrapped up nicely. Now two University of Washington professors are trying to wake us up to this fact with their Calling Bullshit project, which features a fun little interactive website with a quiz on it. The test is simple enough, guess which human face is real and which is not. You'd be surprised how tricky it can get. ► Subscribe for more tech & culture videos: http://on.mash.to/subscribe ◄ MORE FROM MASHABLE ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/6ElleCub6uM ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/jAu1ZsTCA64 ‌• Video - https://youtu.be/W8T6fYt9-tA  Subscribe to Mashable: http://on.mash.to/subscribe  Best of playlist: https://on.mash.to/BestOf  MASHABLE ACROSS THE WEB  Mashable.com: http://on.mash.to/1hCcRpl  Facebook: https://ift.tt/2I7KIYV Twitter: https://ift.tt/2IgAQIf Instagram: https://ift.tt/2I6suXD Mashable is for superfans. Paradoxically, platforms like Uber and Deliveroo could be good for labor unions

In my research on the platform economy, I’ve seen a trend of trade unions mainly attacking websites like Uber and Deliveroo. However, I’d like to argue that their focus on a hostile approach is a mistake and they need to consider another tactic. Let me explain why. We need to talk about the gig economy The time is ripe for a serious conversation about the gig economy. In recent years, classifieds on the back of a local newspaper and in call centers have widely been replaced by online platforms like Uber (taxi), Helpling (domestic cleaning service), DoorDash (local delivery), and…
