How a Ugandan Prince and an Crypto startup are planning an African revolution

Take Africa for instance. Consumers in those countries became so frustrated with the banking fees imposed on their transactions every time the wanted to merely top up their mobile airtime, that airtime minutes alone actually became a form of money. Banking in the way it’s been developed for the developed world simply does not work […] https://ift.tt/2Nf99kJ Mike Butcher October 01, 2018 at 12:03PM

Opera Touch for iOS is great for people with small hands and big phones

Opera today announced the general availability of its newest mobile browser, Opera Touch for iOS. Its killer feature is the ability to surf the Internet on Apple’s latest big-screen phones, especially the truly gargantuan iPhone XS Max. Opera first launched its Opera Touch browser on Android earlier this year. Today marks the first time it’s available on Apple’s mobile devices. To celebrate, the company has created this (somewhat cheeky) promotional video. Feature wise, it shares the same attributes as the Android version. It includes an ad-blocker baked in, with protections against crypto-jacking attacks. It’s optimized for one-handed access through a…

24% of US households now have a smart speaker

Close to a quarter of US households now own a smart speaker, according to research from Nielsen. On average, those who own these devices spend an average of 65 minutes using them on each weekday, rising to 72 minutes on Saturday and Sunday. In Q1 2018, only 22 percent of US households owned a smart speaker – such as the Amazon Echo, the Apple Homepod, or the Google Home – so this two percent rise (to 24 percent) over the last quarter shows that the technology is gathering some steam. Originally, uptake for smart speakers was slow, with only 800,000 US households having…

TRON is giving DLT devs an 85% discount on Hard Fork Decentralized tickets

We’ve come a long way from Satoshi’s white paper in 2008. Every day we’re pushing the limits of what’s possible on the blockchain, and we have developers to thank for it. That’s why we’d like to offer DLT devs an 85-percent discount on their ticket to Hard Fork Decentralized, our first blockchain and cryptocurrency event. We’re partnering with TRON Foundation, one of the largest blockchain-based operating systems in the world, to make this discount possible. Coke’s on the blockchain now

A hardware hacker from Brasil has developed an automated vending machine that delivers Coca-Cola in exchange for Bitcoin. But don’t get your hopes up, it’ll probably be a while before we see these in the wild. The dev used a handful of off-the-shelf materials like a Raspberry Pi, water pump, touch screen, some wood, and of course some programming know-how, to build the machine. Here’s how the Bitcoin-vending machine works: From the video, it appears that the customer scans a QR code which requests a BTC payment, the customer then issues the payment using their wallet, and once the payment…

EOS community in meltdown over allegations of voting corruption

The EOS community is dealing with more bombshell allegations of corruption. Block.one, the software firm behind EOS, has been forced to rebuff claims Chinese cryptocurrency tycoons are working together to keep control of its blockchain. Last week, an anonymous source supposedly leaked an internal document with some pretty damning accusations. It claims that “collusion, mutual voting, and pay-offs” are commonplace amongst EOS block producers, particularly cryptocurrency exchange desk Huobi. Primary allegations are that Huobi and other powerful block producers are mutually voting for each other in order to retain status and secure passive income. Further, it is claimed that specifically…
