Microsoft Unboxed: Tech in the Sea (Ep. 28)

This week on Microsoft Unboxed, Sonia and Colleen are diving into underwater technology. To kick things off, Colleen shares about the “Internet of Oysters.” She tells the story of a woman named Ros Harvey and how her company, The Yield, introduced real-time sensors to analyze the water that the oysters drink in Tasmania, where farmers harvest about 36 million oysters a year. Colleen also shares how Ros Harvey is applying the use case to solve the broader issue of feeding the world, as the world must produce 70% more food by 2050. Then, Sonia tells a story of how Northern Territory Fisheries wanted to count the fish in Australia’s Darwin Harbour, but faced the challenges of heavy tides, swells, murky water and dangerous creatures. They found a solution with AI and image training – and they’re continuing to expand their efforts. This image training technology is now available on GitHub for other companies to use. ►Microsoft Unboxed is a weekly YouTube series from Microsoft, hosted by Sonia Dara and Colleen O’Brien. We’ll look at Microsoft’s latest technology, and the people and stories behind the tech. Tune in every Thursday at 9AM PT for new episodes. ►Watch Microsoft Unboxed: Microsoft Unboxed: Preserving History (Ep. 27): https://youtu.be/nqmOlVus3W4 ►Subscribe to Microsoft on YouTube here: https://ift.tt/2tQ4529 ►Follow us on social: LinkedIn: https://ift.tt/2C07ZV1 Twitter: https://twitter.com/Microsoft Facebook: https://ift.tt/1YJO1UL Instagram: https://ift.tt/1MrzlUw ►Visit the Women in Business & Technology podcast: https://www.wibt.com ►For more about Microsoft, our technology, and our mission, visit https://ift.tt/2tVJpWy ►Video Credits: The Yield + Microsoft: Transforming the Australian agricultural industry: https://youtu.be/0EK15i7CUsY Every fish counts: How Northern Territory Fisheries are putting AI to work in Darwin Harbour: https://youtu.be/NaSWYBZZR88 #Microsoft #MicrosoftUnboxed #Sustainability https://ift.tt/33DxiLu Microsoft August 15, 2019 at 11:06AM
