Chrome 71 blocks all ads on websites that display too many popups
If you hate random popups or fake system warnings on a website, don’t worry – Chrome’s got you covered. The Google-owned browser’s next version, Chrome 71, will block all ads on a website if it provides an “abusive†experience. Google defines abusive experience as fake messages, phishing, auto-redirect without user action, and unexpected click areas. Website owners can keep a track of reported abusive experiences on their sites from a special report page. Google will give them a 30-day window to take corrective action on flagged experiences. After that, it’ll block all the ads on that particular site. Last year,…

MacBook Air review
For three years, the MacBook Air was conspicuously absent. The ultraportable never left Apple’s site, of course, but we finished keynote after keynote wondering why Apple continued to neglect one of its most popular products, all while overhauling the rest of the MacBook line. At an event last month in Brooklyn, however, Apple finally acquiesced, […] https://ift.tt/2qxo1SA Brian Heater November 06, 2018 at 06:00AM
Mac Mini review
At last month’s Apple event, the Mac Mini was greeted like a returning hero. Maybe it was the over the top space advert or the fact that the company had packed the seats of the Brooklyn opera house full of local employees. A weekend with the new MacBook Air
It's a gray, blustery Saturday, and I'm curled up on the couch with a cup of coffee and the new MacBook Air. The laptop is warming my legs, but not uncomfortably so. It takes three times more energy to mine Bitcoin than gold
According to newly published research, mining cryptocurrency takes nearly twice as much energy than mining gold, platinum, and copper. Bitcoin on its own, needs three times as much energy to mine than compared to gold. Researchers from the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Cincinnati tracked the daily energy demand and hashrate of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Monero between 1st January 2016 to 30th June 2018. The researchers then used the average daily market prices of each cryptocurrency – and the respective rewards gained from successfully mining a block – to calculate how much energy it takes to…

Study of political junk on Facebook raises fresh questions about its metrics
A midterms election study of political disinformation being fenced by Facebook’s platform supports the company’s assertion that a clutch of mostly right-leaning and politically fringe Pages it removed in October for sharing “inauthentic activity” were pulled for gaming its engagement metrics. Though it remains unclear why it took Facebook so long to act against such prolific […] https://ift.tt/2QnUPZR Natasha Lomas November 06, 2018 at 06:00AM
Facebook removes 115 suspicious accounts ahead of US mid-term elections
Just before the US mid-term elections, Facebook removed a total of 115 accounts it thought that ‘engaged in coordinated inauthentic behavior’. The company said US Law enforcement contacted it on Sunday to report suspicious online activity, which they believed was possibly linked to foreign entities. Today, the social network removed 30 accounts from Facebook and 85 accounts from Instagram. Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy Nathaniel Gleicher said: We immediately blocked these accounts and are now investigating them in more detail. Almost all the Facebook Pages associated with these accounts appear to be in the French or Russian languages, while the Instagram accounts…
