South Korean regulator warns of serious fallout if ICO ban lifts
South Korean lawmakers will decide the future of domestic initial coin offerings (ICOs) in November, but that hasn’t stopped its top financial regulator from lashing out at the cryptocurrency market one last time. Financial Services Commission (FSC) chairman Choi Jong-ku has continued to back his governments ban on public ICOs, enacted last September, saying it is just not worth the risk, Yonhap News reports. “Although many people call for the government to allow initial coin offerings, there are still uncertainties related to such a move as well as the possibility of serious fallouts,†Choi declared at a recent parliamentary audit meeting. Choi…

Pollinating drone bees can’t replace honey bees, ecologists calculate
The successful demonstration of remote-controlled “drones-bees†by Netherlands’ Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has been making news since Tuesday. But the buzz surrounding the drone’s applications could be much hyped, according to at least two independent estimates by biologists. Many popular news websites reported that the university’s drone-bees could successfully replace real bees in pollination if they go extinct, but this might be optimistic. First, it’s not economically feasible to mass produce the robot insects. Second, there’s a flaw in understanding the science of pollination. The Netherlands is one of the largest exporters of food and agricultural products in…

UK payments startup SumUp launches a 3G-powered credit card reader
SumUp, the London-based payments startup, today launched the SumUp 3G Reader — a card terminal that lets merchants process payments without the need for a mobile app or a constant Wi-Fi connection. Previous iterations of SumUp’s card reader hardware required users to tether the device to either a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. This approach has one major disadvantage: if your phone runs out of power, or you forget to bring it with you, you’re unable to take card payments. As the name suggests, the SumUp 3G Reader comes with an integrated mobile data connection, allowing merchants to take payments…

Social media is being weaponized at a terrifying rate
Social media reliance is so rampant in today’s landscape that it has come to drive some of our best and worst impulses and experiences. Outside of cyberbullying and poor treatment, there are much more serious implications—like when a community turns these platforms into a weapon to smear and systematically destroy the lives of others. It’s a form of weaponization that turns a relatively good-natured platform into something more sinister. But there are real-world implications for the improper and unethical use of social networks. Some recent examples include the backlash and subsequent firing of James Gunn for old jokes, the purported Russian interference…
