Italy slaps Apple and Samsung with a combined €15M fine over dodgy software updates


Italy’s top anti-trust watchdog today fined Samsung and Apple €5 million each over allegations their software updates deliberately slowed down users’ phones, Reuters reports. In addition, the agency stung Apple with a further €5 million fine over complaints it failed to provide end-users with clear information about how to maintain and replace failing batteries. In a statement published after the verdict, and translated by Reuters, the agency said that certain firmware updates from the two manufacturers “had caused serious dysfunctions and reduced performance significantly, thereby accelerating the process of replacing them.
