Can We Build a True AGI?

Whether or not we can build an AGI is the topic of this episode of The AI Minute. Transcript: In my hour long podcast “Voices in AI,” I have guests that I often ask about consciousness and our ability to generate a general intelligence. Very few of the guests question whether we can build an artificial general intelligence, and when I press it, usually they say there's nothing magical about humans and about intelligence. Often it seems that their view of the world is that you can either look at the human brain mechanistically and say, “Of course you can build one,” or you have to appeal to magic or supernatural forces, or other non-scientific ways of thought to come up with the scenario that precludes us being able to generate a general intelligence. I don't think this is necessarily the case. Nobody doubts that the universe as a whole behaves mechanistically, but we can still look at it and say are there aspects of it that we don't ever expect we will be able to reproduce. Time unfolds the way it does but that doesn't mean we believe we will have mastery of it so that we can travel through time. Gravity’s mechanistic, it behaves as it does and we can describe it in great detail but we don't necessarily believe we're going to build an anti-gravity device. So Intelligence in machines, if we’re unable to achieve it, may not be because of any appeal to supernatural forces but just to the limit of physics itself. https://ift.tt/2MLBiDD gigaom August 08, 2019 at 06:03PM
